Veda (Bengali) 29 | Prayer to end Poverty | Swami Samarpanananda
Notes
This talk covers two prayers. The first one (Rig Veda X.155) is to remove poverty, and second one (Rigveda 10.117) is about gifts.
O Miserly, evil looking, deformed, ever-screeching,
Go to the hill that is your home.
I, Shirimbitha will destroy you
By various means.
May this Alakshmee be driven away from this and other worlds. May she, the destroyer of wombs (of men and plants), be driven away by the power of the mantras of Brahmanspati.
The wood, who has no owner, and is floating by the far off sea shore, take that (O Alakshmee!) and go to a distant shore.
O Mandurdhaniki (maker of foul sound), when you move away swiftly, all the enemies of Indra get slain and disappear like bubbles (in water).
These gama (Visvedeva) have brought back the cows taken away by paNi, has established Agni in various places, and have provided food to the gods. Who can defeat them?
THE Gods have not ordained hunger to be our death:
even to the well-fed man comes death in varied shape.
The riches of the liberal never waste away,
while he who will not give finds none to comfort him.
He who, possessed of food, hardens his heart against the needy who comes asking for food, and yet enjoys(his own food in front of him, that man finds no consoler (ever in life).
He is a data, who gives food to the needy, wandering about for it. Such a person gets the results of yajna, and he finds friends even in enemies.
He is not a friend who gives not food to a friend who is ever his companion. One must turn away from such a person; his home is not fit for dwelling. Go seek a more liberal person.
A rich person must help one who asks for money. That is the way to be on the path of dharma. Wealth keeps moving from one to another, the way a wheel of a chariot goes up and down.
I speak the truth: aprachetah, man with unclear wisdom, acquires wealth in vain, since it is death for him. He serves neither god, nor a friend; he who eats alone is a mere sinner.
The blade of the plough moves to produce grains for the farmer, a person walks distances and thus creates wealth for his master, a Brahmin who utters mantras is better than one who stays silent; just like that a person who engages in charity is better than who does not do so.
One who has one part (of wealth) goes to one who has two;
He who has two parts, goes to one who has three,
and he who has four parts comes up overtaking the two part holder (and three),
thus goes to series in which poorer goes to the richer.
The two hands are similar but not alike in strength; two cows born of same mother do not give same milk; two twins do not have same valour, two persons of the same family do not display equal liberality.

William James is famous for helping to found psychology as a formal discipline, for establishing the school of functionalism in psychology, and for greatly advancing the movement of pragmatism in philosophy.
His belief in the connection between mind and body led him to develop what has become known as the James-Lange Theory of emotion, which posits that human experience of emotion arises from physiological changes in response to external events.
William James was a psychologist and philosopher who had a major influence on the development of psychology in the United States. Among his many accomplishments, he was the first to teach a psychology course in the U.S. and is often referred to as the father of American psychology
